The county town and Episcopal see Pécs is situated in the southern foothills of the Mecsek Hills. With is 162 000 inhabitants the city is the 5th largest one in the country, centre of Baranya county. Sopianae, the Roman predecessor of Pécs was established at the 2nd century. By the 4th century the city became a flourishing provincial centre. Due to its Roman roots Pécs is often called as „the city with Mediterranean ambiance”. In 1367 the first Hungarian university was established here by the king Louis the Great. Pécs is a festival city with many cultural events from spring to autumn. Its historical churches, museums, cosy cafés and restaurants, narrow alleys are inviting us for a relaxing walk. The surrounding region is ideal for excursions, for instance Harkány with its hot watered spa or the famous Hungarian wine region Villány.
